2004 was the first year for Relay For Life in North Branford. As a first year event the fundraising goal was $40,000, but in the end the grand total raised was
an amazing $130,250 !! This would not have been possible without the involvement of hundreds of people from throughout the community who took part as
walkers and volunteers. Some other highlights from 2004:
- over 70 teams took part
- 13 Kids Care teams took part
- more than 1200 people registered as participants
- 114 cancer survivors were present
- 1,880 Luminarias lined the track after nightfall.
North Branford's achievement has earned recognition by the American Cancer Society in their 2004 Relay for Life awards:
New England Awards
Area 4 Rookie Event of the Year (area 4 is Connecticut excluding Fairfield & Litchfield counties). North Branford was third in all of Connecticut behind
Ridgefield and Newtown.
National Awards
Per Capita Award Winner, New Haven County. Among counties with populations between 500,000 and 1million, New Haven County ranked #7
nationwide ($1.66 per capita). North Branford was one of 8 Relays in New Haven County that contributed to this success (the others: Cheshire,
Hamden/North Haven, Meriden/Wallingford, Milford, Shoreline, Tribury, Waterbury)
Million Dollar County. New Haven county was one of only four counties in New England to raise over $1million in total.
