Think about all the people you have known - family, friends, coworkers, neighbors. Some, maybe many, of them will
have suffered from cancer. Some will have survived, while some will have been lost to the disease. You may be
a cancer survivor yourself, or perhaps you are a caregiver. The point is, everyone has been touched by cancer
to some degree.
Consider these statistics*....
- The American Cancer Society estimates there will be almost 1.4 million new cases of cancer nationwide in 2005
(not including basal and squamous cell skin cancers, of which an additional 1 million cases are expected)
- over half a million people in the US will die of cancer this year. That's more than 1,500 people a day or, to put
it another way, the population of North Branford every 10 days.
- Cancer causes 1 out of every 4 deaths in the United States.
- In Connecticut, the ACS estimates 17,000 new cancer cases (not including skin cancers) this year, the most
common being prostate, breast, lung, and colorectal cancer.
- More than 7000 people are expected to die from cancer in Connecticut in 2005. Lung cancer kills more people
in Connecticut than any other type of cancer.
Although cancer survival rates have increased significantly over the past few decades, largely due to earlier
diagnoses and improved treatments that have come from breakthroughs in scientific research, the fact remains
that 1 in 4 deaths in the US are from cancer. There is still a long way to go. The American Cancer Society provides
over $100 million in research funding annually in the fight against cancer, and Relay For Life is the society's
biggest fundraising event.
As a community-wide event Relay offers everyone the chance to make a positive contribution in the fight against
the disease - Just as everyone can be affected by cancer, so everyone can help fight it.
